What Is Google PageRank?
PageRank is an algorithm used to rank websites based on the number and quality of links to the website. Developed in 1998 by Google pioneers Larry Page and Sergey Brin, it was the first successful attempt by a search engine to rank the authority of a particular web page. Essentially, this means that pages with more backlinks will rank higher.
As the engineers explained in the original paper, PageRank was intended to “bring order to the web” by assigning weights to pages. They built an algorithm around the idea that random web surfers visit the site and click on links to visit other sites. The probability that a random surfer will land on a particular page is the PageRank of that page. Scores are calculated based on a logarithmic scale from 0 to 10. 10 represents the most authoritative web source available.
PageRank is an objective measure that aligns with the subjective intent of searchers.
The more sources referencing a page, the more valuable the information on that page and the more likely users are to visit it.
However, the referrer is not the same. The number of pages linking to them is also measured.
The more backlinks a referencing page has, the more PageRank power it gives the linked page. Let’s take a closer look.

Although Google discontinued its Toolbar PageRank a few years ago, this metric is still relevant to your SEO. While you shouldn’t obsess over it, remember that your internal linking structure and relevant external links influence your website’s search engine rankings.
